About
Founded in 1974 as the Korean Film Depository, KOFA is the national moving-image archive that collects, preserves and passes on Korean film to future generations.
Greeting
Founded in 1974 as the Korean Film Depository, KOFA is the national moving-image archive that collects and preserves Korean films and audiovisual materials for future generations. We have systematically gathered materials from film and video production, accumulating the history and memory of Korean screen culture, and broadened their use for research, creation and public enjoyment.
Korea today stands amid unprecedented change. Rapid advances in AI are reshaping how content is produced, distributed and consumed, and K-content’s global spread is drawing more international interest in Korean culture than ever.
The audiovisual environment is changing fast. AI is transforming how materials are discovered, restored and used, and KOFA’s heritage of hundreds of thousands of items is gaining fresh attention, beyond a record of the past, as a vital asset behind K-content’s identity and creativity.
KOFA will build on its achievements, adopt AI-based digital archiving, and develop its collections into an open platform for creators and researchers. We will also promote independent films, documentaries and animation, and broaden Korean screen culture.
Thank you.
