Kim Kee-duk Collection
A box set that includes the four main movies by director Kim Kee-duk, which are his directorial debut, “Five Marines” (“O in-uk haebyeong”), commonly acknowledged as hist most famous movie, “The Barefooted Young” (“Maenbal-uk Cheongchun”), the “division melodrama” masterpiece “The North and South” (“Namgwa Buk”), and a sex comedy ahead of its time, “Horse-year Bride” (“Maltti Sinbu”). “Five Marines” (“O in-uk haebyeong”) is a “humanist” war movie that focuses on the drama of five soldiers during the war rather than on the spectacle of the war. “The Barefooted Young” (“Maenbal-uk Cheongchun”), which provided an original form of the Korean youth movie genre through the duo Shin Seong-il and Um Aing-ran is recorded as the movie that created a cultural phenomenon at the time, such as with the actors’ clothes, hairstyles, the twist dance and the main theme by Lee Bong-jo. “The North and South” (“Namgwa Buk”), a Hanunsa radio drama made into a movie, is a tragic love story resulting from the division of the country, densely filmed through elaborate mise-en-scéne. “Horse-year Bride” (“Maltti Sinbu”) shows images of active women rarely shown in Korean movies of the time through the audacious episodes of women born in the horse-year.
A special feature of the “Kim Kee-duk Collection” is commentary by director Kim Kee-duk himself, with junior film experts for all the movies. Director Kim, is together with journalist Joo Seong-cheol for “Five Marines” (“O in-uk haebyeong”), with critic Kim Young-jin for “The Barefooted Young” (“Maenbal-uk Cheongchun”) and “Horse-year Bride” (“Maltti Sinbu”), and with Professor Kim Hong-joon for “The North and South” (“Namgwa Buk”), participated in the recording and not only introduced interesting episodes and direction intentions but also meticulously analyzed movie scenes. An almost 60-page appendix is also included. Director Kim’s biography, an introduction to the filmography of 66 movies, and a discussion on directing by movie critic Kang So-won (“A Generic Traverse containing Contemporary Atmosphere: Kim Kee-duk’s Movie World”) are included in Korean and English. Also included are two documentaries (45 and 44 minutes) on Director Kim and image galleries of Kim and for each movie.
