Green Rain(1966)

The term Cine Poem, which refers to a film consisting of rhythm and symbol of edited image, is a nomenclature that symbolizes the aesthetic experiment and advancement of Korean films in the mid to late 1960s. Debuting at the age of 25, then- youngest filmmaker Chung Jin-woo began experimenting Cine Poem in his second film Betrayal (1964). His style was influenced by Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960) and Louis Malle’s Elevator to the Gallows (1958), which were introduced to Korean viewers at the time. Then, he completed the experiment in First Love (1966) which was released in the same year as Green Rain. Experimenting his style, Chung also surpasses the genre’s limitations of youth films, which peaked in 1964 with Barefooted Youth and entered a downward phase, and the clich? of romance of double betrayals between a young man and a woman who hide their identities.

The main actor and actress of the film are Shin Seong-il and Moon Hee, the best young stars of the time. It is noteworthy that one of the movie actress troika including Nam Jeong-im and Yun Jeong-hee of the 1960s, Moon Hee meets with Shin Seong-il, who starred in more than 500 movies and is the top star in the Korean film history, in Green Rain, which is mentioned as their representative work in that it brings out the twos’ charms and potentials to the fullest. Above all, whoever watched the film could not help but fall for the lovely eyes and facial expressions of then- new actress Moon Hee.

Green Rain in this Blu-ray is based on the video resource that was restored into 4K by the members of the Korea Film Archive in 2017. Chung still conveys his own producing and directing philosophy with clear memories even after fifty-five years of the film production, which will offer a decisive clue to understanding the film.
