Tuition
A 35 mm print of this movie was collected from the China Film Archive in 2014 and was restored digitally by the Korean Film Archive. It is also the 15th Korean film out of a total of 157 films produced before 1945. The movie was made based on a composition by Wu Su-yeong, a fourth grader in Bukjong School in Gwangju, which received a prize from the Japanese Government General of Korea in the newspaper Gyeongilsohaksaeng Sinmun. It was produced by the Korea Film Association, a production company that had a significant influence during 1930s Korea under Japanese rule and jointly directed by Choi In-gyu and Bang Han-jun. This movie is notable above all for their directing. Although the movie bypasses the innocence of a child with the underlying idea that Korea and Japan originated from the same root, the scenery of Joseon in the colonial period made by Korea people can still be found unconsciously within the movie. In this aspect, “Tuition” made in 1940, is outstanding in terms of historical value and the completeness of the movie.
The booklet accompanying the DVD contains an introductory comment on the process of discovering the movie and its historical value by Senior Researcher Jeong Jong-hwa of the Korean Film Archive, and an introductory comment on the Korea Film Association, which was one of the most important production companies then, and also the producer of this movie, by Lee Hwa Jin, a movie history researcherin Korean and English. The booklet, which introduces the movie in detail along with the situation of the period and the process of discovering the movie, will help the understanding of viewers.
