Japanese Colonial Era Movie Data Series

Joseon Films in Japanese Magazine, vol. 7

The recently published 《Korean Movies featured on Japanese Magazines, vol. 7》 is categorized into two sections. The first one collected 70 articles related to the Korean period from the first edition of『Manchuria Movie,』which was published by an institution called the Manchukuo Film Association, to the June edition in 1940, and translated about 60 Korean-related documents that were in the 1943 edition of the『Movie Yearbook』by the Japanese Movie Magazine Commission.

In particular, the translation of 『Manchuria Movie』in the first section was done for the first time, and includes scenes that were not popular or omitted by Korean movie companies of the time. In particular, articles about films by avid fans from the Amnokgang such as “Cinema Enjoyment Night,” “The First Alliance Movie” and (Jeon Chang-geun, 1941) are enough to attract the attention of researchers and readers. On the other hand, it is expected to provide imagination that goes beyond the limits of national movie studies by interpreting various articles about the “identities of Manchuria” in order to achieve “national accordance” from the early foundation of the nation.

In the second section, “Movie Yearbook” provides detailed information about the overall Korean movie industry during wartime control in terms of statistical values in each section of Korean films, and KoreanKorean and its movies as seen by the Japanese people. As “Movie Yearbook” contains detailed information on the Korean movie industry following last year’s edition, it is estimated to provide an important reference to look at Koreanthe industry during Colonial period. </bokjimalli>
