This project selects one theme each year, produces DVD sets with subtitles in seven languages, and distributes them free of charge to overseas diplomatic stations and research centers. Our goal is to increase the interest and understanding of enthusiasts and researchers alike regarding Korean culture, society, and history.

Masculinity on Screen 2 - Understanding Star Persona through Films presents six landmark works that illuminate the multifaceted appeal of Korea’s legendary leading men: KIM Seung-ho in The Money (dir. KIM So-dong, 1958), SHIN Young-kyun in Rice (dir. SHIN Sang-ok, 1963), SHIN Seong-il in A Girl Who Looks Like the Sun (dir. LEE Man-hee, 1974), AHN Sung-ki in Our Joyful Young Days (dir. BAE Chang-ho, 1987), HAN Seok-kyu in The Gingko Bed (dir. KANG Je-kyu, 1995), and SONG Kang-ho in A Taxi Driver (dir. JANG Hun, 2017).

These actors not only established enduring archetypes within Korean cinema but also continually redefined them, enriching the screen with new and diverse representations of masculinity across generations. They
embodied the warm yet troubled father—struggling with inadequacy but devoted to his family; the resilient leader who forged a path through the hardships of postwar Korea; and the generous elder brother who offered strength and comfort to those around him. At other times, they appeared as figures of intellect and sensitivity desired by women, or as ordinary citizens who rose to become pivotal agents in the nation’s democratization. We invite cinephiles everywhere to experience the enduring charisma of these actors and, through them, to gain a deeper appreciation of the richness and complexity of Korean cinema.
