Women on Screen was planned for overseas researchers and 6 WOMEN ON SCREEN fans of Korean film who are seeking to learn more about Korean society through Korean films. the history of Korean film goes back nearly 100 years and more than 6,600 films have been produced. However, Korean films have largely been unknown overseas until recently, and the number of films introduced is still limited. Classic Korean films exposed to outside audience are even rarer. However, this also means that there are many classic pieces yet to be discovered. We have planned this package as a guide to Korean film that will enable people to more easily access the past and present of Korean society through films. On a more fundamental level, its purpose is to introducε Korean film and culture to a wider audience.
We chose “Korean Society and Woman" as the theme. Under this theme, the following 8 films are included in a single box set: Sweet Dream, 1936, by Yang Ju-nam; Madame Freedom, 1956, by Han Hyeong-mo; Bound by Chastity, 1962, by Shin Sang-ok; Homebound, 1967, by Lee Man-hee; Yong-ja's Heydays, 1975, by Kim Ho-sun; Suddenly in the Dark of Night, 1981, by Go Yeong-nam; Gilsotteum, 1985 by Im Kwon-taek; and Happy End, 1999, by Jung Ji-woo. Most of the above titles are masterpieces of film directors who represent the history of Korean film. There are many other works that could well be included under the theme, but considering that Korean film is not widely known overseas, we have selected pieces that are most recognized.
