Booklet: Literature on Screen 2
The topic of ‘Literature’ was selected again following the first iteration in 2014. As is universally known, literature and cinema have wielded mutual influences upon each other. Korean literature and cinema is no exception; indeed, Korea arguably has a more comprehensive and deep-rooted literature-cinema relationship than most other countries. As we regretted that only 8 films were contained in the DVD box set Literature on Screen in 2014, we are consequently quite pleased to present the second volume now.
The films included in Literature on Screen 2 are as follows: The Wedding Day (dir. Lee Byeong-il, 1956), The Descendant of Cain (dir. Yu Hyun-mok, 1968), The General’s Mustache (dir. Lee Seong-gu, 1968), A Shaman’s Story (dir. Choi Ha-won, 1972), Soil (dir. Kim Ki-young, 1978), The Man with Three Coffins (dir. Lee Jang-ho, 1987), The Road to Race Track (dir. Jang Sun-woo, 1991), and Beyond the Years (dir. Im Kwon-taek, 2006). These films deal with a variety of issues, such as the problem of modernity during the Japanese occupation period, generic specificities of so-called literary film, modernism and post-modernism, auteurship as well as discourses of national specificity and locality. I hope that these films and the related discourses will help you to grasp the relationship between Korean cinema and literature, and see how they reflect the shifts in Korean society and culture. I hope that this year’s box set will be fresh and useful to overseas Korean film enthusiasts and researchers and stimulate meaningful debate.
As with previous years’ editions, this year’s DVD box set contains 8 language subtitles of Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic, and 2 booklets published in Korean and English.
