Booklet: Masculinity on Screen

This project marked its start with the topic of Women on Screen in 2012, and the topic of Family on Screen was followed in the second year. As is well known, family unit is a modern economic subject, and its members are assigned to respective roles according to their gender. In Korean society, in which patriarchal characteristics were predominant under the Confucius influences, such practices of role differentiation were relatively more obvious, but its shifts in modern days have been dynamic. Korean film has been capturing such practices in shifts in which various configurations among family, male, and female take place.

In this context, we picked this year’s topic as Masculinity on Screen, in which eight films—The Sea Knows (dir. Kim Ki-young, 1961), A Man and a Gisaeng (dir. Sim U-seop, 1969), Quit Your Life (dir. Park No-sik, 1971), Winter Woman (dir. Kim Ho-sun, 1977), Village of Haze (dir. Im Kwon-taek, 1982), Black Republic (dir. Park Kwang-su, 1990), The Day a Pig Fell into a Well (dir. Hong Sang-soo, 1996), and Breathless (dir. Yang Ik-joon, 2008)—were selected. As the selected films range from the colonial period to the age of industrialization, democratization, and globalization, respectively, each male subject, originating from each film and different periods, presents various characteristics and aspects of Korean masculinities. The booklet, which contains extensive essays on each film, is written by Korean film study researchers and film critics and, I believe, will function as a comprehensive guide to understand modes of masculinities in transformation, background of its emergence, and, by extension, Korean society in general. I hope that this year’s DVD box set would attract interest in the past and now of Korean masculinities from all the overseas audiences and researchers.
