Multilingual-subtitle DVD Collection
Booklet: Contact on Screen
This DVD box set of Contact on Screen is a product of a nonprofit collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and Korean Film Archive. We hope this project helps overseas’ audiences to develop a richer understanding of Korean society and culture through Korean films. This project selects one theme each year, produces DVD sets with subtitles in seven languages, and distributes them free of charge to overseas diplomatic stations and research centers. Our goal is to increase the interest and understanding of enthusiasts and researchers alike regarding Korean culture, society, and history.
we chose 2021’s theme of Contact on Screen, and would like to introduce works which show how Korean culture contacts and influences each other with cultures in other places. The films selected for the collection include 6 films such as Spring of Korean Peninsula (Dir. LEE Byeong-il, 1941), The Body Confession (Dir. JO Keung-ha, 1964), Sunset in the Salween River (Dir. CHUNG Chang-wha, 1965), The Homeless Wanderer (Dir. SHIN Sang-ok, 1968), That Which Falls Has Wings (Dir. JANG Gil-su, 1989), and
Dooman River (Dir. JANG Ryul, 2009).
We sincerely hope that you will be able to see the various “internal” or “external” cultures involved in the formation of Korean culture throughout the diverse periods involved, from the era of Japanese colonialization to that of industrialization; from the collapse of the Cold War system to democratization, or to even globalization, which has been active behind these otherwise historical and political forces. As global interest in Korean visual culture has been growing so rapidly these days, we feel nervous as well as excited about how your culture in your place comes into contact with the external culture of Korea, and what kind of relationships such contact will produce.
