Booklet: Women on Screen 2
This DVD box set of Women on Screen 2 is a product of a nonprofit collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and Korean Film Archive. We hope this project helps overseas’ audiences to develop a richer understanding of Korean society and culture through Korean films. This project selects one theme each year, produces DVD sets with subtitles in seven languages, and distributes them free of charge to overseas diplomatic stations and research centers. Our goal is to increase the interest and understanding of enthusiasts and researchers alike regarding Korean culture, society, and history.
While the previous series(Women on Screen) highlighted Korean female subjects contending with societal and state oppressions, this year's series, Women on Screen 2 aims to introduce works showcasing the diverse charms of female stars who have represented Korea. The collection consists of six films: A Sister’s Garden featuring CHOI Eun-hee (dir. SHIN Sang-ok, 1959), A Splendid Outing with YOON Jeong-hee (dir. KIM Soo-yong, 1978), Shock Continues Long starring KANG Soo-yeon (dir. KWAK Ji-kyoon, 1989), Doctor Bong featuring KIM Hye-soo (dir. LEE Kwang-hoon, 1995), My Mother, the Mermaid starring JEON Do-youn (dir. PARK Heung-sik, 2004), and Next Sohee with BAE Doo-na (dir. July JUNG, 2023).
These selected films present the actresses in roles beyond passive victims. They actively solve problems, resist oppression, and break away from stereotypical female roles in Korean cinema. These films showcase a spectrum of female characters: from the eldest daughter shouldering the responsibility of supporting her family, to a female executive feeling threatened by her societal standing, to a woman whose personal experiences of sexual violence turned into broader societal awareness, to a modern woman torn between career and marriage, to a female detective empathizing with the tragic death of a young woman and yearning for a better society. We especially hope that Korean film enthusiasts worldwide will fall for the charms of these powerful Korean actresses through this series and deepen their interest in Korean cinema.
