Booklet : Seoul on Screen
This DVD box set of Seoul on Screen is a product of a nonprofit collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and Korean Film Archive. We hope this project helps overseas’ audiences to develop a richer understanding of Korean society and culture through Korean films. This project selects one theme each year, produces DVD sets with subtitles in seven languages, and distributes them free of charge to overseas diplomatic stations and research centers.Our goal is to increase the interest and understanding of enthusiasts and researchers alike regarding Korean culture, society, and history.
We are pleased this year to share films under the theme of Seoul on Screen and take the opportunity to tell the history of Seoul, the most iconic urban space in South Korea. The six films selected this year include Holiday in Seoul (dir. LEE Yong-min, 1956), Let’s Meet at Walkerhill (dir. HAN Hyeong-mo, 1966), Night Journey (dir. KIM Soo-yong, 1977), Rosy Life (dir. KIM Hong-joon, 1994), My Dear Enemy (dir. LEE Yoon-ki, 2008), and The Day He Arrives (dir. HONG Sang-soo, 2011).
Through these films, all filmed on location in Seoul, viewers can recognize diverse groups of people either at the center of attention or marginalized in the urban development of the nation. The process of the city becoming Seoul as it is today has embraced many groups and events, including migration to Seoul, urban development, globalization, and the period following the Asian banking crisis of the late 1990s. Nowadays, interest in Korean visual content is at its peak, and we are looking forward to discovering what new things will be found through the process of overlapping and comparing urban spaces in South Korea with the urban spaces in your own country.
