Japanese Colonial Era Movie Data Series

Joseon Films in Japanese Magazine 4

As the fourth volume of the series “Chosun Movies as Seen through Japanese Magazines”that began to be published in 2010, this volume contains translations of Chosun movie-related articles found in a typical wartime movie magazine of the late Japanese Empire, “Ten-day Movie Report” published in 1943. In particular, what is noticeable is that the entire “Chosun Movie Special Edition” published in the July 11, 1943 issue of “Ten-day Movie Report” is translated; it is no exaggeration to say that an overview of Korean movies during the Japanese colonial era is summarized therein.

The fourth volume, containing translations of the “Chosun Movie Special Edition” is expected to take the No. 1 place as a reference for researching movies of the Japanese Empire. “Chosun Movie Special Edition” was planned at that time via the “Ten-day Movie Report” in order to regulate Chosun movies as national movies and manage each area of Chosun movies. However, the fact that through such a plan, the history and details of the Chosun movies and statistics until 1943, for example, “30 years of Chosun Movies,” “Chronology of Chosun Movies,” “List of Registered Technicians of Chosun Movies” and “List of Chosun Cinemas” are organized in it provides many implications for future researchers. In other words, beyond the fact that important Korean movie materials are discovered and organized, it should be recognized that these materials themselves show complex aspects of the colonial/empire structure. The “Chosun Movies as Seen through Japanese Magazines” series is expected to contribute to expanding the research field of the history of Chosun/Korean movies.
