KOFA Double Feature: For Glory & For Love
Period2023-02-18(Sat) ~ 2023-02-23(Thu)Location시네마테크KOFA 1관
'KOFA Double Feature' is a programme that brings together two exceptional films under a united theme to inspire new discoveries and pleasures from each work.
Taking a cue from last year's release of Yoon Je-kyoon's Hero and Choi Kook-hee's Life is Beautiful, the former an original musical adapted from the hit stage production and the latter a jukebox musical featuring covers of popular songs, this double feature pairs two modern classics of each musical subgenre, Alan Parker's Fame (1980) and Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! (2001).
At first glance, the two films feel worlds apart. Fame is a gritty coming-of-age drama set in New York City while Moulin Rouge! is an extravagant love story set in glamorous Paris. The connection they share is that both films dive breathlessly into the whirlwind that is the hopes and dreams of artists chasing the intangible, namely that of glory and love. As words fail to express the incredible highs and overwhelming lows they experience in the pursuit of their fantasies, the characters defy the limits of our own reality and burst into song and dance. It is this defiance inherent to the musical genre that allows for electrifying moments of emotional ecstacy and devastation.
The otherworldly experience of watching Fame's ensemble belt out with all their might the closing 'I Sing the Body Electric' and Moulin Rouge!'s Christian and Satine fall in love through song in the epic 'Elephant Love Medley' is something that should be treasured together. That is what makes the theatrical experience so essential. Though both films may have prospered beyond the boundaries of cinema through successful stage adaptations, the cinematic experience will always be in a class of its own. We cordially invite you to (re)experience the originals on the big screen the way they were truly meant to be seen.
